Wickramasila National School can be called as a school that was started in the eighties after independence. Giriulla Education Zone of Kurunegala District got this new school as a result of government intervention implemented with the aim of eliminating educational disparities in areas outside the capital.

With the idea of ​​expanding the opportunities for science education for the children of the area, Kurunegala District Minister and Katugampola Member of Parliament Honorable Gamini Jayawickrama Perera laid the foundation to start the school.

His main aim was to provide a science school to the Giriulla region. For this purpose, it was decided to build the school on a piece of land called Kadavathgala Watta near Giriulla town. Mr. I.M.Herath Bandara, who was the Principal of Narangamuwa College at that time, legally handed over this piece of land for the construction of the school.

Accordingly, on 05.01.1979, at the invitation of the then Kurunegala District Minister and Katugampola Member of Parliament Hon. Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, with the participation of the then Minister of Education Mr. Nishanka Parakrama Wijeratne, His Excellency the President at that time JR. Mr. Jayawardena laid the foundation stone to establish the school.

On 15.01.1980, the school was opened by the Honorable Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa with the participation of then Minister of Education Lionel Jayathilaka under the name President Madhya Maha Vidyalaya. The school started with 256 children, 14 teachers and a single building (Kelani Hall). Students were admitted to 6th, 7th and 8th grades by conducting a competitive examination after receiving the applications and selecting the students who scored the highest marks.
